PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY (7News) — Alexander Austin is a director at Employ Prince George's. On Thursday, he oversaw a virtual job fair. Around 70 job seekers attended and interviewed with around 10 businesses, all located at National Harbor and neighboring Tanger Outlets. "So, it actually mirrors a live in-person event," Austin told 7News on Zoom. "So, you'd enter the room and you'd see all the banners, which we call them virtual booths of the companies. You can go in, you can have conversations live with the recruiters. You can actually video conference with the recruiters. You can look at the job descriptions, check out the actual company information, they actually upload video and infomercials about the companies, and you can submit your resume." The list of hiring companies included McCormick & Schmick's, Bobby McKey's Dueling Piano Bar, The Brass Tap, Brookiegirl Bath + Body Care. plus the new Hyatt Place. "We had the new Hyatt hotel. They were a big winner today. They had about 40-plus resumes submitted... they had about 30 positions open, 40 resumes submitted," Austin added. Wednesday's virtual job fair came amid nationwide concern that COVID unemployment benefits are tempting some of the unemployed from going out and applying for work. In turn, many restaurants and hotels have been stressfully understaffed. "We really tried to cast a wide net to get as many people interested in the event as possible," Austin remarked. "We are deeply entrenched, you know, with the initiatives of Prince George's County, and looking forward to getting all Prince George's County residents back to work who need employment." Employ Prince George's says it is planning more job fairs this summer, focussing on specific geographic areas.

COVID-19: A Conversation on How Small Business Can Achieve Success in this New Normal
The United States Department of Justice reports that over 650,000 people are released from prison every year. Unfortunately, studies show that approximately two-thirds of those released will likely be rearrested within three years.
